Accelerated Reader, or "AR" as it is often called, is an online, reading incentive program available to the students at High Point. After reading a book, the students take a 5-20 question quiz on the computer and points are earned according to the reading level of the book and percentage of questions answered correctly.
Quizzes can be taken on a High Point computer during the school day and students
have access to over 150,000 quizzes, both fiction and nonfiction.
The PTA provides generous support for the program and volunteers provide monthly prizes and several celebrations throughout the year to reward students and classes for the points they have earned.
All students in grades 2-5 are given a personal ID and password and provided with an orientation session so that they can participate in the program.
Students in Kdg and 1st grades are individually recommended by their teachers throughout the year when they feel that their reading and computer skills are developed enough so that they will have a postive experience with the program.
AR helps the students develop reading comprehension skills and helps promote a lifelong love of reading. It can also serve as a valuable tool for the teachers by providing diagnostic data on the reading progress of their students.
